Like many Grenfell evacuees, I discovered Nova in the summer of 2017. It was a very sad and difficult time and Nova really helped us.
I have four children (three boys and a girl) and we were lost as to how to fill our days during the school holidays. Living in a hotel is really hard, it puts the whole family under pressure. Not being able to go home or to go abroad meant that having things to do and places to go with the children made a huge difference.
Almost once a week we joined Nova on an outing. Kew Gardens, Chessington World of Adventure, the V&A, the movies, the zoo and so many others, we did them all. The children loved it. I made friends with some of the mums, which was great. It’s a good way to connect with others and to find community. We are definitely looking forward to joining Nova’s family programme this summer. The kids can’t wait.
One year on from Grenfell and we are finally close to moving back home. It’s been a long twelve months but we are so thankful for Nova’s support. There were days when Nova would phone me just to say hello and ask if we needed anything. No other reason, just to ask after us. They treated us like family. They know all my kids. And of course I’ve recommended them to friends.
The other big thing that Nova did for me is help me get a work placement in a nursery. I’m in the process of studying for a diploma in childcare with the Paddington Trust and my course requires me to get work experience. It is thanks to Nova that I am progressing in my course. The other really great thing about Nova is that if they can’t help you for whatever reason, they will connect with others who can. They’re a wonderful organisation.
