Organisation Testimonials

I have worked with Nova New opportunities since 2006. In 2012, I had the opportunity to refer two individuals to Novafor supported work placements. The two clients we placed at Nova have built up a great deal of confidence and work skills, which will be imperative once they go into paid employment.

Nova New Opportunities is approachable for new ideas that come up within the Gate Advice project at the Campden Charities. They are consistent in the delivery of their support and always ensure each of our clients are given the support and guidance they need whilst they are working towards the objectives of Nova and fulfilling the requirements of their individual duties. Nova provides regular feedback with regard to how much progress our clients are making.

Nova New Opportunities has been a great ally in supporting the educational inclusion of Roma Gypsies and Travellers in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. Partnering with them on two different NIACE funded programmes I have found the staff professional, skilled and just lovely company to be around. The programmes have widened the access and inclusion of Traveller communities to become digitally literate – learning to use computers, audio editing software and packages such as Word and Excel. I look forward to doing more work with them in the future.
Our Foundation has funded Nova New Opportunities with grants of various sizes in every year since our launch in September 2008. We are convinced that Nova delivers a very effective and efficient programme addressing clear need in our local area and beyond, teaching literacy, numeracy, computer skills and English to young adults failed by the school system, and to recent immigrants who lack the tools to secure work. Led by a committed, passionate team, the Nova system is holistic, providing also CV writing and interview skills, and also volunteering opportunities in its teaching centre and café to provide graduates with work experience, vital to enable them to secure and hold jobs. Above all, Nova is a happy and motivated “family” where its students feel that, quite apart from the expert tuition delivered, the personal support received from teaching staff and fellow students is a crucial part of their progress and building self-confidence.

When I first came to Nova I was looking for a direction. I was new in London, pretty excited and kind of lost. I was overwhelmed by so many big opportunities wrapped in even bigger challenges. Nova’s staff helped me to add a sense of purpose to my quest for a professional realisation. Working as a volunteer for Nova gave me the opportunity to improve myself and my curriculum, and I’m so glad to have achieved that with people that really cared about me. Today I’m a better professional, more confident and prepared for the challenges ahead of me, and I’m truly grateful for the role Nova played in it.

Coming to Nova to volunteer as a support assistant in Numeracy Entry 3/L1 and also in Literacy Entry 3 has helped me build my confidence and believe in my abilities. I have gone on to do PTLLS and I am now doing CELTA. With these qualifications and the very valuable experience gained at Nova, I hope to go into full-time teaching in the adult learning sectors. The feeling and atmosphere at Nova is that of a big happy family which is very supportive and conducive to learning and achieving.

What I like about Nova is the feeling of being valued and appreciated for my work and time as a volunteer as an Admin Assistant, Reception Support and Spanish-English Interpreter. The friendly and cheerful atmosphere at Nova makes Mondays an uplifting way to start my week. We all cooperate as a team and also I work on my own initiative doing a variety of tasks that keeps me motivated. Working for Nova has contributed to enhancing my self-esteem and self-confidence while learning new skills and brushing up existing ones.

I have been volunteering at Nova for almost 2 years and I can honestly say that I’m loving being able to help others in my community. As a volunteer trainee tutor no two days are ever the same and this keeps me keen to grow and develop.

I first came to Nova nearly 2 years ago after going on the RBKC volunteering website. I recognised it from years ago when I first worked as a youth and community worker and then as a Housing Advisor and remembered the good work that it did then. I immediately felt welcomed and at home here, from ALL of the staff and students. The welcoming, safe, warm, inclusive, diverse, holistic and empowering people philosophy of Nova for users, staff and volunteers was evident from the beginning. I was encouraged to co-teach and teach the class on my own. The teacher’s encouragement gave me the confidence to apply to update and finish the new full teaching qualification. Nova gave me an excellent, supportive mentor and along with the comradeship of the staff, and the organisation encouraging and guiding me, with regular internal and external CPD, I have successfully completed year 1 of my DTTLS and look forward to continuing next year at Nova for year 2. Nova has given me back my confidence and enthusiasm for teaching which I thought I had lost, during my traumatic years. Their encouragement, non-judgemental attitude and acceptance, and acceptance of me has brought me back full circle into my community, training and work and I feel happy to be part of their ‘family’.
